To the PGA Tour, LIV Golf Invitational Series defectors are skunks at the picnic. But at the 2022 US Open Championship, everybody gets to eat under the shade tree.
That means Iowa sportsbook customers can bet on Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson or Sergio Garcia even if some of their tee partners want them to hop on a cart and keep driving until they hit Massachusetts Bay.
This year’s third major unfolds June 16-19 at The Country Club in Brookline, MA.
Tiger Woods is the sport’s biggest draw but he’s trying to manage his health to take part in the 150th Open at St. Andrews, July 14-17.
Local favorite Zack Johnson, a Cedar Rapids Regis graduate and Drake University alum, isn’t on the US Open Championship list this year, either.
How to watch the 2022 US Open Championship
NBC Sports has the 2022 US Open Championship and they will start viewers off on the Peacock streaming service each day. USA Network and NBC itself take over for a majority of the coverage. Betting on the 2022 US Open Championship
The 2022 US Open Championship features a 156-player field so picking the eventual champion is a longshot no matter who you back.
As you see, Rory McIlroy is coming off a win in Canada. He is favored this week too, but if you want some safer options, these odds tables might inspire different golf bets in Iowa.
How does the LIV series factor in?
The PGA Tour issued suspensions for 17 golfers, and the number could grow to at least 20 once Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed and others tee off at an LIV Golf event. None of that applies to golf’s majors, however. These tournaments have their own set of rules for eligibility.
PGA defectors like the LIV series because of:
- guaranteed and larger paydays,
- smaller fields, which increase the odds of winning and
- LIV’s three-day schedule format.
But the LIV stars are taking some pointed criticism because the upstart tour’s biggest shareholder is backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. Critics feel the country is using sports to distract from human rights violations.
As of now, LIV Golf isn’t on the list of approved wagers at the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission website.
