Prairie Flower Casino history

The casino opened in 2018, and it is named after the daughter of the famous Chief Standing Bear, who led the tribe when it was removed from present-day Oklahoma.

Prairie Flower Casino’s history is a pretty turbulent one. First of all, the Ponca Tribe fought a legal battle for a decade against the city of Council Bluffs and states of Iowa and Nebraska, which argued that the tribe had broken the 1988 Indian Gaming Regulatory Act by building a casino on the restored lands.

However, the US District Court ruled that the lands on which Prairie Flower Casino resides were not restored lands, so the Ponca Tribe could freely continue with the operation of the casino, which houses Class II gambling machines.

The casino was officially opened on Nov. 1, 2018, and gives Omaha residents a great opportunity to enjoy casino gambling without having to cross the Missouri River.

The current casino is, in fact, just the first phase of the Ponca Tribe’s plan to build one a large state-of-the-art gambling destination. For the next phase, a massive expansion is planned that will see some 25,000 square feet of space added to the casino floor, together with 2,000 gambling machines and 50 live tables.

To do so, Prairie Flower Casino will have to obtain a Class III gambling license, which could be a major investment in itself. Still, with that kind of license, the facility would be able to add a sportsbook operation, as well.
