Background for a Cy-Hawk basketball bet

The Iowa vs. Iowa State rivalry dates back to 1909, but the teams didn’t play from 1935-1970. Moneyline bets have paid off for fans who bet on Iowa Hawkeyes basketball the last three years. Iowa also leads the overall series 47-27.

In its most recent outing, Iowa fell 87-83 in its home conference opener Monday against Illinois. The Hawkeyes are 7-2 overall and 0-2 in the Big Ten.

The Hawkeyes are led by Keegan Murray who is the nation’s leading scorer at 23.9 ppg. He missed Friday’s game at then-No. 2 Purdue due to an ankle injury. He came back to score 17 of his team-high 19 points in the second half against Illinois to shave a 15 point second-half deficit down to three Monday night.

Coach Fran McCaffery said:

“Keegan wasn’t himself early, and maybe that’s understandable coming off of an injury. But he had it going in the second half.  We need to be better with our execution and limiting second-chance opportunities.”

As Murray continues his progress, he’ll be assisted by Patrick McCaffery who adds 12 ppg. Keegan’s brother Kris Murray averages 11.3 ppg.

Iowa State hopes turnaround continues with a Cy-Hawk win

The Hawkeyes will see a new coach and a completely different roster at Hilton Coliseum. Nobody who scored a point in last year’s Cy-Hawk game is still on the Cyclones roster. Needless to say, a Iowa State basketball bet is much better this season compared to the two-win team from a year ago.

Iowa State’s three double-digit scorers Izaiah Brockington (16 ppg), Gabe Kalscheur (12.1 ppg) and Tyrese Hunter (11.6 ppg) will all see the Hawkeyes for the first time.

In another sign of progress, the Cyclones snapped a 25-game road losing streak with its 64-58 win Saturday over Creighton in Omaha. Coach T.J. Otzelberger said:

“That’s a tough game — not an easy game emotionally to play. I’m proud of our guys. They’re gritty. They stay together and they work hard every day.”

Beyond Cy-Hawk: The road to March Madness

Iowa’s Division I universities still have high-profile non-conference games left to pad an at-large resume. The Cy-Hawk winner will have another quality win in hand for the NCAA Selection Committee.
