North Iowa Fights 14

For the second time this summer, it’s fight night in Iowa. Mason City Arena hosts North Iowa Fights 14 starting at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Three Iowa casinos have a partnership with Elite Sportsbook, which accepts bets on the regional MMA bouts.

That means you can make a North Iowa Fights bet in person at casinos in the Quad Cities, near Iowa City and at the casino near Sioux Falls. You can also sign up for the online Elite Sportsbook in Iowa.

The July 30 card in Mason City will see 10 bouts, headlined by a lightweight title fight between Mike Plazola (16-10) and Jose Aguayo (4-2).

In the co-main slot, Jon Kennedy (10-35) returns after a decision win back in May to take on professional newcomer Dakota Vance (0-0).

Promoter Mike Estus said he feels a bit more relaxed as this is his second show of the year, despite the quick turnaround from his last show in May.

“It is more relaxed, but knock on wood, you know?” Estus said.

North Iowa Fights 14 Odds

As of Wednesday, Elite Sportbook offered these North Iowa Fights 14 odds:

  • Derek Gottlieb (+150) vs. Jessy Ebrecht (-175)
  • Gabriel Sayeg (-250) vs. Ryan Fournier (+200)
  • Eddie Larrea (+175) vs Artiom Cula (-220)
  • Jon Kennedy (+500) vs Dakota Vance (-725)
  • Mike Plazola (+225) vs. Jose Aguayo (-275)

Main Event: Plazola vs. Aguayo

The main event will see the open 155-pound title on the line. Plazola, fighting out of Waterloo will take on Aguayo, who is fighting out of Stockton, CA and Caesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

Plazola is looking to get back into the win column after back-to-back losses in the last year. Aguayo earned back-to-back wins — from North Iowa Fights in 2019 and 2021.

“Mike has been around a long time and Jose is coming from the Diaz Academy,” Estus said. “It’s a three-round title fight. That’s the agreement because Mike is older, but they have to weigh 155 flat.”

All of Aguayo’s professional wins have come from submissions, a testament to his legendary Stockton camp known for creating fighters with slick jiu-jitsu, including Nick and Nate Diaz

As Estus pointed out, Plazola has a lot of pro experience in MMA cages, dating back to 2008. Plazola has also been boxing over the last few years, so he brings a lot of experience on the feet.

Kennedy vs. Vance

Kennedy returns after winning against Mason City’s Jim Stapleton back in May. Kennedy’s pro career began in 2011 and he has even had a bout against Estus. Before his last victory, Kennedy was on a six-fight losing streak so he looks for his first back-to-back wins since 2014.

On the other side of the cage will be the pro debut of Vance. The 6-0 amateur is looking for his first pro win in Mason City. He is coming off two submission wins, both for North Iowa Fights.
