Diamond Jo Casino History

The casino first opened in Dubuque’s Ice Harbor as a riverboat casino. It was initially named Casino Belle, but it didn’t take long before being relocated to Missouri in 1993, changing from the original owner to the Dubuque Racing Association.

Already owning a casino license, the DRA partnered up with the Greater Dubuque Riverboat Entertainment Co. and opened a casino on its boat, later known as Diamond Jo, after Joseph Reynolds, owner of a shipping company from Dubuque.

Diamond Jo officially started operating under this name on May 18, 1994. A year later, the small boat was replaced with a bigger boat that could fit 1,500 passengers. The casino operation was purchased by Peninsula Gaming, a company based in Dubuque that had big plans, spending $1 million on upgrading the riverboat.

The company then officially opened another Diamond Jo casino in 2006, the casino covered in this text. In 2020, Boyd Gaming acquired Peninsula Gaming, and both Diamond Jo casinos officially became Boyd properties.
